Turning the MLK Holiday Into a Day On!

For the second consecutive year, the NCS Service Board observed Martin Luther King Day by organizing a Day of Service on Jan. 18 for Middle and Upper School students.

The students heard from Tawana Purnell, head of the Bishop Walker School for Boys and the former Lower School head at NCS. Purnell offered words of wisdom for young women and talked about how integral service -- to oneself and others -- is in one's life. Her warmth, wisdom, and compassionate presence was felt by students, parents, and staff.

The Service Board invited Purnell to join in a Lower School "throwback" tradition by giving "Red Roses" salute to two students -- Farah Emory-Muhammad '17 and Jordan Gasho '18 -- for their leadership and community service. The Service Board also announced a financial contribution to the Bishop Walker School in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Following the program and lunch, 30 Upper School students supported moving families out of poverty by volunteering on behalf of A Wider Circle. Several Middle School students stayed on campus to prepare dozens of snacks and 200 sandwiches for Martha's Table's mobile food truck, McKenna's Wagon. The group also made Valentine's Day cards for elders in the area.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to another successful service day through their presence and participation.
