NCS's Science Olympiad Draws Hundreds

Twelve schools from three states and the District of Columbia gathered Saturday on the Close to take part in NCS's third annual Science Olympiad Invitational. For many of these schools, including NCS, the tournament served as the kickoff event to their "SciOly" season, and it drew hundreds of competitors.

In her first Science Olympiad competition, Avery Borgmann '20 brought home two first-place results. She teamed with fellow 9th grader Miranda Giambi to win the Forensics event, and she and Ilina Gobburu '19 won the Invasive Species event. NCS dominated the latter event, taking three of the top four spots: Brigitte Meyer '19 and Georgia Currie '18 took third place, and Macallan Penberthy '17 and Maggie Wang '19 finished fourth.

NCS also collected top-three results in Towers (Anna Christou '17 and Kimberly Tan '18, second place); Astronomy (Elizabeth Thoren '17 and Margaret Thoren '17; third place); and Robot Arm (Lily McGrail '17 and Giuliana Weiss '19, third place).

Centennial High School in Ellicott City claimed the team title. NCS entered 60 girls in the competition—about one-fifth of the Upper School—which allowed the fielding of three teams. Competing against schools many times larger than theirs, the Eagles finished in 8th, 11th, and 14th place out of 24.

A highlight of the invitational was the keynote address from Donna L. Young. She is the lead educator for the Chandra X-Ray Center at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, and she is the national event supervisor for the National Science Olympiad's Astronomy event. We were pleased to welcome her to NCS.

Congratulations to all the students who competed, and good luck in the weeks and months to come during the Science Olympiad season.
