NCS Wins D.C. Science Olympiad Title, Qualifies for Nationals

National Cathedral School will represent Washington, D.C., at the Science Olympiad National Tournament in Fort Collins, Colo.
National Cathedral School will represent Washington, D.C., this week at the Science Olympiad National Tournament after capturing the city-wide title last month.

The Eagles will travel to Fort Collins, Colo., for the May 18-19 national meet at Colorado State University. They will be among 61 teams competing: Nineteen states will send two teams each, while a Japanese team will also compete.

NCS won the D.C. championship in convincing fashion, capturing 10 of the 15 events as well as all three trial (exhibition) events. Thirteen of the 15 team members won at least one event, with Bea Markham '20 and Yara Sigvaldason '20 winning three and seven others winning two.

The D.C. triumph at Wilson High on April 7 follows back-to-back titles in Maryland in 2017 and 2016, when NCS topped the small-school division. NCS also sent a Middle School team to the city meet and took second place behind BASIS D.C. in a close result.

In Science Olympiad, teams of 15 students square off in events involving biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and earth science. Some events present students with open-book exams, while others call on them to construct things. Results are tallied, and the schools are ranked. The overall winner is the one that ranks near the top in most events.

The dozens of girls on this year's "SciOly" team prepared for the state meet with a grueling season of competitions that took them to three states: Boston for the MIT Science Olympiad Invitational; Manheim, Pa., for the MC Barons Invitational; and College Park, Md., for the Central Maryland Science Olympiad Tournament. NCS also hosted a competition in December.

Good luck to the NCS competitors at nationals and to their sponsors: Avery Borgmann '20, Greta Drefke '19, Alyssa Gabidoulline '20, Hailey Kim '19, Irene Kim '20, Bea Markham '20, Brigitte Meyer '19, Mia Millstein '19, Nicole Owens '19, Eliza Poggi '19, Yara Sigvaldason '20, Addison Van Namen '19, Siena Waldman '20, Giuliana Weiss '19, Rachel Yoon '20, Iva Budina '21 (alternate), Madeleine Drefke '21 (alternate), Susan Karpatkin (sponsor), and Greg Lefever (sponsor)!
