NCS Awards Honors to Students at Annual Flag Day

NCS celebrated one of its oldest traditions on June 8 with its annual Flag Day prize ceremony. Seventy-five seniors were individually recognized before an audience of NCS students, parents, and friends outside the Washington National Cathedral, and 34 awards, touching on every department in the school, were bestowed on students in four grades.

Andrea Escoto '18 was chosen by her senior classmates to deliver the Flag Day address, and Head of School Kathleen O'Neill Jamieson presented NCS's highest academic honor, the Flag, to Brett Pearson '18, Phoebe Suh '18, and Kimberly Tan '18. The award recognizes the senior with the highest grade point average based on the average of the junior and senior end-of-year academic records.

NCS faculty and staff members announced the winners of other awards, and Mrs. Jamieson recognized and thanked retiring faculty member Catherine Batza for her many years of service to NCS.

This year's ceremony featured several guests: the Very Rev. Randolph Marshall Hollerith, who delivered the invocation; the Rev. Canon Rosemarie Logan Duncan, who announced the John Templeton Kraus Memorial Prize; and U.S. Army Maj. Betty Myrthil, who delivered a Certificate of Appointment to the U.S. Military Academy to Clara Bartram '18.

In keeping with Flag Day's traditional patriotic theme, Katharine Boasberg '18 sang "America the Beautiful" at the opening of the ceremony and Alex Giannattasio '18 the National Anthem at its close.
