Assistant Director of Communications

National Cathedral School (NCS) seeks an assistant director of communications to serve as the lead writer for the school’s print and digital publications, including NCS Magazine and the school website, and to help manage its social media channels and website. Through an emphasis on storytelling, the successful candidate will inform prospective and current families and graduates about NCS’s unique character and convey how students, graduates, faculty, and staff pursue the school’s mission and live out its core values in and out of the classroom. The assistant director reports to the interim director of communications. 

Responsibilities: 
  • Serve as lead writer for NCS’s print and digital publications, including NCS Magazine, monthly newsletter Eagle Pride, weekly parent Bulletins, and the school website; and serve as co-editor of NCS Magazine, which is distributed twice a year to more than 7,000 people.
  • Regularly review website with an eye toward engaging visual content and up-to-date information.
  • Assist in managing and creating content for NCS’s social media channels.
  • Serve as secondary photographer for campus events and images for social media and website.
  • Collaborate with NCS administrators, faculty, and staff on producing official school communications.
  • Provide editing support for communications projects and support the communications department as otherwise needed in its mission to provide high-quality visual and narrative content, compelling storytelling, and clear and consistent information. 
Skills and Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or related field.
  • Minimum of three years of experience producing written communications that are clear, lively, and compelling and present a clear understanding of grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that allow for the establishment and development of solid working relationships within a diverse community.
  • Strong editorial judgment and commitment to accuracy.
  • Experience and skill using a content management system for online publishing.
  • Experience and skill managing professional social media accounts preferred.
  • Competence with photo- and video-editing software preferred. (NCS uses Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere.)
