Student's Paper to be Published

Chase, Steven
Alexandra Petri, a senior at National Cathedral School, will have an essay published in the spring 2006 issue of The Concord Review. The scholarly publication is a quarterly review of the best high school history research papers in the United States.
Her paper, “Progressivism's Last Crusade: George Creel, Raymond Fosdick, and the Moral Mobilization of America in World War I,” deals with the efforts of men like Fosdick and Creel to reshape America along Progressive lines.  These efforts reached into both the military and civilian arenas, including programs for the suppression of “vice” and the creation of an army of “Four Minute Men” – enthusiastic speakers who addressed public assemblies from movie theaters to synagogues.  She writes that, ironically, the success of Fosdick and Creel in wedding their moral reforms to the war effort contributed to disillusionment with Progressivism when the war ended before most American soldiers had seen action.

Ms. Petri is the fourth National Cathedral School student to have a paper published in The Concord Review. The journal, founded in 1987, is available in the U.S. and in 32 other countries. For more information about the publication, visit http://www.tcr.org/

Ms. Petri wrote the paper for a class taught by David Zimand, chair of the School’s social sciences department. She will attend Harvard University in the fall.
