On May 24 the Upper School held an end-of-the-year awards assembly recognizing several kinds of student achievement. Celebrated were the school’s impressive showings in the national foreign language exams as well as its tradition of community service, along with other contributions made by community members over the past year.
While Flag Day is NCS’ major annual awards day, so many individuals deserve recognition that the Upper School has held pre-Flag Day awards assemblies for many years. Click here to see the full list of the day’s honorees. All of these names will also be listed in the program for Flag Day on June 12.
A few highlights from the Language Exams: Meredith Hilton ’13 earned a perfect score on the National Latin Exam for levels 1-6, one of only 568 students to do so out of the 138,000 who took the test in the US and abroad. Megan McKoy ’10, who has taken Latin since 7th grade, earned her fifth gold medal; Maddie Mott ’11, her fourth gold medal. Three NCS seniors took highest honors in the National Greek Exam: Kaitlyn Peden ‘10, Laura Reston ‘10, and Kelsey Slaughter ‘10. Both exams are sponsored by the American Classical League.
Nearly 126,000 students participated in this year’s National Spanish Exam, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. NCS had five gold medal national winners who scored above the 95th percentile on the Level 4 exam: Christina Bax ‘10, Alexandra (Sasha) Hanway ‘11, Caroline Kelley ‘11, Bridget Morrison ‘11, and Kate Wernick ’11, as well as many national gold medal winners on Levels 1, 2, and 3. Gold medal winners Paola Maseda ‘13 and Elizabeth (Lily) Bou ’14 (Level 1), Karen Lee ‘13, Shafali Jalota ’13, and Ellena Popova ’13 (Level 2) and Carolyn Gigot ‘12, Anna Grenier ‘11, Michelle Lee ‘12, and Alexandra Gurley ’12 (Level 3) all received the highest scores in the city.
Over 100,000 students take part in the National French contest, sponsored by American Association of Teachers of French. On the national level the following students scored in the top 5 percent and were ranked (i.e., “2nd”) as part of the group who received the same scores: In Level 2, Alexandra Bryski ‘13 and Christina Graubert ’13 scored 2nd; Ana Lea Albright ’12 scored 3rd; In Level 3, Parisa Sadeghi ’12 scored 2nd; In Level 4 Christina Cary ’11 and Meredith Hilton ’13 scored 3rd; and Zayna Bakizada ’11 scored 4th; and in Level 5 Juliana Canfield ’10 and Elizabeth Lewis ’10 scored 6th.
