Faculty Awards
On Flag Day, Lay Middle School Chaplain Josie Jordan was honored with the Class of 1995 Senior Parents’ Gift Award, which recognizes the teaching of the "whole child." Also honored were Social Sciences Teacher David Sahr for his 20 years of service, and English Teacher Geoffrey Schramm, who received the John S. Wood “Great Cities” Teaching Fellowship.
Science Department Chair Elna Clevenger and Lower School Music Teacher Tanya Coyne have been named the 2009-2010 recipients of NCS’ “Outstanding Teacher” award, established by the Class of 2004 Senior Parents’ Gift.
Social Sciences Teacher Andrew Reilly has received the 2009-2010 Allnut Award, which recognizes a beginning teacher.
Faculty Appointments
Social Sciences Teacher Stephanie Mathurin has been named chair of the Social Sciences department.
Science Teacher Deborah Virtue has fulfilled her term as one of the two faculty representatives on the NCS Governing Board (Science Teacher Nancy Ehrlich is the other); Mathematics Teacher Dolores Hamilton will be the new faculty representative.
Mathematics Teacher Cahlan Mazur has been named co-chair of the Green Committee, serving with Science Teacher Pam Kogan.
New Staff Members
Margaret Curry joined NCS in March as Assistant Campaign Manager in the Advancement Office. Prior to NCS, she worked for the National Childhood Cancer Foundation; prior to that, she spent five years at St. John’s Episcopal School as the Associate Director of Development.
Jennifer Fisell joined NCS in June as the Assistant Director of Finance. A chartered accountant, she previously held positions as bursar of St. George’s School, Ascot in England, where she was responsible for administration, finance, personnel, and facilities. She previously was the bursar of the London Oratory School. Her husband, Jeremy Filsell, is an organist who now serves as the National Cathedral’s Artist-in-Residence.
Transitions
After previously retiring from the Business Office at NCS, Richard (Rick) Dirksen is now truly retiring from bell-ringing at the Cathedral, passing the baton of teaching bell-ringing to the Whitechapel Guild to NCS alumna (Class of ’66) Quilla Roth. Mr. Dirksen is moving to Kentucky.
After five years at NCS, Health and Wellness Coordinator Carolyn Fox has accepted a new position as Lower School counselor for Georgetown Day School starting this fall.
English Teacher Emily Leithauser is leaving NCS after two years to pursue her Ph.D. at Emory University.
English Teacher Keith Muller, who joined NCS in 2003, is moving to Savannah, Georgia, where he will teach at Savannah Country Day School.
Social Sciences Teacher Tina Tran, who has taught at NCS for two years, will marry Paul Neville this June and move to Chiang Mai, Thailand, where he will serve as a Political-Economic Officer at the U.S. Consulate. They met when Tina was in the U.S. Foreign Service in 2007.
Religion Studies Teacher John Schmitz is leaving NCS after one year to pursue teaching opportunities at the university level.
Emily Vargas, who has taught English since 2006, will attend the Harvard School of Education next fall, where she will study education policy and practice.
We will publish new faculty appointments at the start of the school year in September.
