Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey, mother of NCS alumnae Susan Kelsey Duffield ‘65 and Christine Kelsey Andreae ’67, is being honored by the FDA for her role in preventing the use of thalidomide in the US. On Sept. 15 Dr. Kelsey was honored by FDA with the first “Kelsey Award” for her role in preventing the use of thalidomide in the US. The Sept. 14 New York Times and Washington Post recounted Dr. Oldham's inspiring story, when as a new FDA medical officer in 1960 her insistence on scientific rigor in drug review saved thousands from birth defects. Dr. Oldham, now 96, resides in Bethesda, MD. We congratulate Dr. Oldham and her family on this very well-deserved recognition!
