NCS Team Competes in Chesapeake Bay Bowl

On Super Bowl weekend, NCS took part in a very different kind of bowl---one for marine sciences!
On February 5, 2011, seniors Fariha Choudhury , Erin Hays, Summer Modelfino, and freshman Ashley Mehra competed in the Chesapeake Bay Bowl, a marine sciences competition held on the American University campus. The NCS team went up against six other teams in a round-robin format where they answered quick-answer buzzer questions and more complex team challenge questions in writing. Topics covered included biology, geology, marine policy, and the chemistry of oceans and lakes.

The Chesapeake Bay Bowl is one of 25 regional competitions held as part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB), a national academic competition for high schools on topics related to the study of the oceans. The NOSB was created in 1998 in honor of the International Year of the Ocean. Since its inception, it has grown to include 25 regional competition locations with 300 schools and over 2,000 students participating annually.  Winners of the regional competitions go on to a finals meet.

While our team didn’t make the finals, we think Fariha, Erin, Summer, and Ashley are winners for taking part in the Bowl!  As are Science Teachers Jennifer Lear and Nancy Ehrlich for cheering on our team. Go Science at NCS!
