A 22-member NCS delegation took part in this year’s Ivy League Model United Nations Conference (ILMUNC) for high school students, held Jan. 27-30 in Philadelphia. Hosted by the University of Pennsylvania’s International Affairs Association, the conference was attended by approximately 2,200 students from the US, Brazil, China, and other nations. NCS Social Sciences Teachers Dr. Mary DiQuinzio and Dr. Elizabeth Dudrow accompanied the NCS group, whose members are listed below.
This year NCS represented the Kingdom of Thailand and the Republic of Palau, a small island nation located in the Pacific Ocean. As representatives of these nations, we participated in the General Assembly Committees, Economic and Social Councils and in specialized agencies. Some 50-200 students took part in each committee.
Prior to the conference, our delegation researched and wrote position papers on the international issues we would debate, which ranged from maritime piracy to copyright infringement. At the conference each delegate participated in five three-hour committee sessions, during which we debated the issues assigned to our committee.
Following specific procedures mirroring those of the United Nations, students participated in moderated and un-moderated caucuses. A moderated caucus was a moderated debate during which delegates asked the chair (the moderator) to add them to a speaker’s list, and when their nation was called, students presented their nation’s opinion to the whole committee. The un-moderated caucuses gave students a chance to collaborate with other delegates to create resolutions about the issues under discussion. Each committee session ended with a vote on the proposed resolutions.
Overall, the NCS delegation performed very well at the conference. Luise Dziobek-Garrett ’11 received a verbal recognition at the closing ceremonies for her work as the Kingdom of Thailand on the IMF, and Maureen Smolskis ‘11 received a verbal recognition for her work as the Republic of Palau in the Historical General Assembly. Zach Stone, the secretary-general of ILMUNC XVII, says that he looks forward to seeing the NCS team at ILMUNC next year.—Aigerim Saudabayeva ‘11
