Middle Schoolers Match Wits in Geography Bee

NCS champion Kendall Green '16 will compete in the citywide geography bee this March.
On Jan. 5, the entire NCS Middle School body turned out to watch the final round of the NCS Geography Bee. The eight finalists, four 8th-graders and four 7th-graders, had been previously determined through smaller bees held in 7th-grade history and 8th-grade government classes. They met for the final round of competition at a special Middle School assembly with their classmates to cheer them on.

The finalists were Emily Maddrey ’17, Caitlin McNamara ’17, Annabelle Rice ’17, Sophia Triantis ’17, Sophia Boyer ’16, Kendall Green ’16, Alexandra Karppi ’16, and Sita Strother ’16. The bee came down to a final match between Green and Triantis, with Green taking the top spot and receiving a medal from Middle School Director Jody Soja. Green will also compete in March at a citywide meet against other local school champions.

NCS followed the process provided by the National Geographic Society, which oversees and provides materials for the National Geographic Bee. Thousands of schools across the country participate in the competition each year, which is open to students in grades four through eight and designed to increase public awareness of, and student interest in, geography.
