Over 100 solar lights are headed to our partner school in Haiti over spring break, one of the many ways the NCS community is helping others in need.
Solar Lights to Haiti
108 solar lights are headed to Haiti over spring break! During the course of this school year, the Middle School raised funds to purchase solar lanterns for our partner school in Haiti, Ecole St. Paul's, Carocol. St. Paul’s is located in a very rural area of Haiti with no electrification. Families in the Carocol area use small kerosene lanterns after dark, which are a dangerous source of burns, fires, and pollution. Many of these lanterns will be replaced by solar ones which are safe, bright, and environmentally friendly. Students generated funds from the fall Homecoming Dance, a movie night, and a portion of the offering from Lessons and Carols and Share the Light Haiti fundraiser. Enough money was raised to make a donation to the school towards teacher salaries, as well. Science Teacher Tim Harger and Middle School Chaplain and Teacher Josie Jordan will travel to Haiti with the lights on March 23.
THAT WEEK Canned Food Drive Results
Middle School students and advisors brought in 632 cans that amounted to approximately 670 pounds of food. Thanks to all who donated cans, and to the parents who donated their time to deliver the cans to the Washington Area Food Bank.
Red Cross Blood Drive March 16
Sincerest thanks to all who pitched in to assure the success of recent service endeavors including last Friday’s Red Cross Blood Drive. As Upper School Service Board announced Monday afternoon, we reached our goal for the number of sign-ups (and had a few walk-ins). Because of the 19 successful donations, 57 people will be helped thanks to our efforts. Each pint helps three people.
THAT WEEK Wrap-Up: Warriors in a Good Cause Throughout THAT WEEK of service (March 5-9), students supported agencies including Hopkins House, Friendship Terrace, Operation Smile, and Wounded Warrior Project; in addition, speakers from agencies including Kid Power, Higher Achievement Program, Latino Student Fund, and Columbia Lighthouse were invited for an assembly to talk to the Upper School about volunteer opportunities.
The Upper School Service Board, led by Maddy Broas '12 and Julia Maddrey '12, designed the “THAT WEEK” t-shirt for this year, which features the word “service” (with the year “12” forming the "r') against a background of camouflage, appropriate to the senior class theme of “warriors.” Sales, including corresponding buttons with a similar design, have reached over $3128 and counting! Proceeds will benefit designated beneficiaries for THAT WEEK.
