A round-up of recent awards recognizing the achievements of NCS students.
The following awards were presented in Upper School Chapel on May 21:
Lorna Cogswell Mason Award -- Emma Grauberger ’12. The family of Lorna Cogswell Mason, class of 1955, endowed this prize, asking the Social Sciences department to use the funds to support and honor historical research at NCS. Each year, the department recognizes the best independent research paper written in history during the junior year. Emma won for a paper she did for AP History last year.
Rensselaer Medal – Satowa Kinoshita ’13. Presented jointly by the Science and Mathematics Departments, this award recognize academic achievement, and is intended to motivate students toward careers in math, science, engineering, and technology. Awardees who apply to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY, are accepted, and choose to enroll will receive a medal and a $15,000 per year merit scholarship guaranteed for four years.
Harvard Book Prize – Polly Terzian ’13. The Harvard Book Prize is awarded to an outstanding junior who “displays excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.” The Harvard Book Prize was originated by Harvard alumni in 1910. Today, nearly 2,000 Prize Books are sponsored by local Harvard alumni in schools around the world. Doctors Gary and Betsy Nabel sponsored the 2012 Harvard Book prize at NCS.
Fisher Family Award for Outstanding Contribution to the NCS Community – Sasha Bryski ’13. Established by the Fisher Family Foundation in 1999, the Fisher Award for Outstanding Contribution to the NCS Community is given to a community builder, a student who helps to foster interest and involvement in activities that bring people together, and who demonstrates a personal commitment to the larger community.
Sylvia Thompson Memorial Award – Rosemarie Chandler ’12. The Sylvia Thompson Memorial Award is presented to an Upper School Student of moral integrity and outstanding character who consistently puts forth her best effort in all of her scholarly pursuits. The Sylvia Thompson Memorial Award was established at NCS in 2006 in memory of Sylvia Thompson, former Beauvoir teacher, NCS parent, and wife of former Trustee Dodge Thompson. The prize honors Mrs. Thompson’s legacy of strength, character, and commitment.

Rosemarie Chandler was also recently honored as a
2012 National YoungArts Award recipient in the discipline of Voice.
YoungArts, is the core program of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA), and is the exclusive path to the U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts awards. Rosemarie was presented with the award by Upper School Director Sarah Pelmas and the Reverend Gina Campbell prior to Evensong on May 16.
Letters about Literature Awards: On May 12 winners and finalists in the Washington, DC “Letters about Literature” competition attended an award ceremony at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. Congratulations to Victoria (Tori) Griffin ’18, who won the Level I (grades 4-6) competition, and Elizabeth Wells ’18, who won Level I second place!
