Sports Banquet Celebrates the Year in Athletics

On June 6 students, parents, and coaches gathered to honor Upper School athletes.
The NCS Sports Banquet, held in the Athletic Center on June 6, celebrated the hard work and achievements of individual athletes and teams during the 2011-2012 school year.

In the keynote address, Upper School Director Sarah Pelmas shared her sports experiences in school and in adult life. Ms. Pelmas, an avid rower, said she learned much from her coaches and her teammates, and that ultimately she cherishes the experience of being a team even beyond the sport itself. Her advice to students: choose your coaches and teams carefully!

Caroline Yarborough ’12, president of the Athletic Association, welcomed 51 new members from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes to the NCS Athletic Association. To become a member, students must accrue six points; two points are awarded for participation on a varsity team and one point for a JV team.

Coaches for each sport then presented the honors for each team’s Most Valuable Players and Coaches’ Awards. A complete list of this year’s winners can be read below. Coaches also noted ISL and Washington Post All-Met honors. (The Post has not published the Spring All-Met winners yet; we will publish them here when they have been officially announced.)

The evening ended with the 2011-12 Sports Video, which included highlights from the season. You can watch the video here.

Photos from the evening can be seen and downloaded from this photo gallery.

The event was co-sponsored by the NCS Athletics and Physical Education Department and the NCS Parents Association. Special thanks go out to the Sports Committee, chaired by Noni Lindahl and Ken Terzian , and the Banquet Committee for organizing this great event!
