NCS Library “Write-In” a Hit

At 6:00 pm on a Friday evening, 15 students started their weekend with a night of writing in the Library. Here’s why!
While sometimes a play rehearsal or a long basketball game make students extend their time on campus into the evening, it’s still unusual for even the most hardworking NCS girls to choose to stay at school long past the end of classes and sports practices.

However, on Friday, Dec. 6, over 15 NCS students braved the damp and dreary weather to start their weekend with a night of writing in the Library. After signing up over the past few weeks to reserve a spot at the event, a range of writers arrived at 6:00 pm to participate in the first-ever NCS Library Write-In.

Between eating a pizza dinner and cupcakes and brownies for dessert, the attendees found a comfortable working space, explored the writing resources provided by the Library and the Learning Center staff, and wrote! Working on everything from sophomore English essays and religion reflection papers to original poetry and fiction, the writers wrote for several hours straight—with a break for hot cocoa, of course.

As rain drummed on the roof above, the library was filled with the gentle staccato clicking of laptop keyboards, the occasional whisper of advice shared between fellow writers, and quiet scratching of pens against notebook paper. When the space emptied out at 10:00 pm, all the treats had been eaten, several papers planned or drafted, and new creative writing endeavors instigated. In response to the many student requests that the evening become a regular event, the library has already begun plans to hold another Write-In this spring.—Kelly Dickinson, Assistant Librarian
