National Merit and Other Honors

Seniors earn recognition in national honors programs.
National Merit Scholarship Program

High school students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®)—a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represent less than one percent of US high school seniors. To advance to finalist standing, students must complete an application and submit SAT scores. National Merit and National Achievement finalists will be announced in February 2014.

National Hispanic Recognition Program

A separate honors program, administered by the College Board, recognizes academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. Each year, the NHRP honors about 5,000 of the highest-scoring students from over 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT®.
