Model UN Meets in Philadelphia

A 24-member delegation from NCS’s Upper School represented the nations of Bhutan and Ukraine.
NCS students were among high school students from around the world who participated in a weekend of debate activities at this year’s Ivy League Model UN Conference (ILMUNC), sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania Model UN Club. This year’s conference took place Jan. 30-Feb. 2 in Philadelphia.

The NCS delegation, made up of 24 Upper School Students, represented both Bhutan and Ukraine. Each student was assigned to a committee, ranging from UNESCO to Disarmament and International Security (DISEC), in which they had to represent their country’s policy position as they debated particular challenges within that committee’s responsibility. Representatives then tried to cobble coalitions together to pass resolutions representing a particular perspective, thus creating UN policy.

Social events included a group dinner at the Marathon Grill on Saturday night, the Delegate Dance, and various smaller outings to places such as the Redding Terminal Market and the Liberty Bell. The students were accompanied by Social Studies Teacher Andrew Riely, Mathematics Teacher Morgan Eaker, and Capital Campaign Director Blair Kaine.
