On the first day of school, NCS’s Head of School advises students to bring the best of summer with them as they enter a new academic year.
On September 2, 2014, NCS Head of School Kathleen O’Neill Jamieson welcomed students and parents to the academic year in her address at the school’s Opening Cathedral Service, held in Washington National Cathedral.
For those who are new to NCS, Mrs. Jamieson explained the central role of Cathedral service in the life of the school:
“The Cathedral is our blessed refuge….This is not refuge of passive rest and reflection. This is a refuge that fuels the fire in the collective belly of this great community. The values of this church—as expressed in today’s prayers—are our standard and the measure of our success.”
She also counseled students to hold onto their adventuresome summertime selves:
“Don’t leave summer completely behind. Choose instead a summery autumn in which you keep hold of the best of your time away and share the experiences that helped you grow since last we were together.…Be observant as you being the year—not just attentive to the assignments of the days ahead, but observant.”
