This week, The University of Chicago honored John Velosky, leader of the Voyageur Program for more than 18 years, with the Outstanding Educator Award. The accolade recognizes “educators whose guidance has helped students along the path toward intellectual growth.” He was nominated by NCS alumna Sara Ryan ’23, a first-year student at the University.

“The Voyageur Program isn't as much about paddling and climbing as it is about community,” says Velosky. “I feel lucky to be a part of it every day, and it's wonderful to see a student that we've had the opportunity to work with for several years come away with such a genuine appreciation for that space.”

Director of Athletics Heather Dent reflects on Velosky's impact on the Close community: “It is a joy to observe John interacting with students each day through our Voyageur program. His teaching within the program is an integral part of helping students understand the importance of protecting and nourishing our environment. John provides an indoor and outdoor classroom for students to think independently as well as collectively to solve challenges and work collaboratively. He helps provide safe spaces for the students to share vulnerabilities and listen empathetically to others. To receive thanks and praise from our alumnae is the greatest accolade for teachers.”

Congratulations, John!
