NCS Varsity Field Hockey Wins On Senior Day Over Georgetown Visitation
The NCS Varsity Field Hockey Team celebrated Senior Day in style with an exciting 2-1 victory over ISL opponent Georgetown Visitation on October 14 at home. The Eagles got off to a fast start, scoring both of their goals within the first ten minutes of the game, and held on in a frenetic final few minutes on defense. On the first goal, forward Claire McGinnis ‘17 took a pass from Margaret Dent ‘16, carried the ball down the right side, and sent the ball into the circle, where Co-Captain Rosie Delk ‘16 lifted a shot on goal. A charging Selin Everett ‘17 knocked it in out of the air to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead. NCS continued to attack aggressively, earning several penalty corners, and soon capitalized on one of them. Meghan McGovern ‘17 inserted to Claire McGinnis ‘17, stationed at the low right side of the circle, and McGinnis sent a crossing shot that the Visitation goalkeeper saved. Delk, who had held the top of the circle, sent the rebound back in (her second assist of the day) and McGinnis touched it past the goalie to give NCS a two-goal lead. In the second half, the momentum shifted and Visitation counter-attacked aggressively, outshooting NCS 6-2 after halftime. Co-captain Hadley Irwin ‘16 came up big with several tackles and clears deep in Cathedral territory, as did midfielder Natalie Belt ‘16, who played a brilliant defensive game and intercepted numerous Visitation passes. With 14 minutes to play, however, Visitation’s pressure paid off and they scored in transition. With the score 2-1, Visitation’s attackers redoubled their pressure and almost tied the game inside 5 minutes with a shot headed just inside the left post, only to be turned away by a full-length diving save by NCS goalie Sam Gibby ‘19. The win was not yet safe, however, as Visitation drew two penalty corners in the last 30 seconds of play. The corner defense of Everett, Irwin, Gibby, Millstein and Addy Wolf ‘17 held them off, however, and NCS held on for the win. After the game, Coach Jane DeGrenier honored the thirteen members of the class of 2016: Co-Captain Rosie Delk, Co-Captain Hadley Irwin, Natalie Belt, Margaret Dent, Madison DiLenge, Ellie Frank, Katie Graham, India Ingersoll, Zoe Lindahl, Siobhan Robinson-Marshall, Meredith Sherman, Dominique Turner, and Samara Watkins.
