Varsity Field Hockey Defeats Sidwell Friends, 3-1

The NCS Varsity Field Hockey team defeated league opponent Sidwell Friends by a 3-1 score on Tuesday, October 20. Although the game was fairly evenly contested in the first half, NCS proved able to convert on two of its four first-half corners to take a 2-0 lead. For the first goal, Meghan McGovern ‘17 inserted to Selin Everett ‘17 who dodged a Sidwell defender and sent a ball towards the left post where McGovern touched it in past the Sidwell goalie. A few minutes later, NCS drew another penalty corner and this time, Addy Wolf ‘17 put a shot on goal, resulting in a rebound that Rosie Delk ‘16 one-timed in for the second NCS goal. In the second half, Sidwell Friends counterattacked aggressively and put significant pressure on the NCS goal. Goalie Sam Gibby ‘19 (seven saves on the day) made several strong saves, but Sidwell scored with approximately 15 minutes to play to cut the NCS lead to 2-1. Sidwell continued to threaten, but strong play by defenders Wolf, Hadley Irwin ‘16, Mia Millstein ‘19, and Fiona Heaps ‘19 helped preserve the lead. With approximately 5 minutes to play, Everett stickhandled the ball through multiple Sidwell defenders and drew another corner. Once again, the Eagles made the most of the opportunity, as Wolf took a cross from Claire McGinnis ‘17 and put the ball in to provide the final two-goal margin of victory. With the win, NCS brings its ISL record to 5-2-1 on the year (8-4-1 overall), with three league games remaining.
