The NCS Varsity Field Hockey went to overtime for the second time this season in a Sept. 24 away game against Stone Ridge, but this time neither team scored in the ten minute extra period and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The game was hard-fought throughout the 70 minutes, with both teams playing strong defense so that possession changed frequently in the midfield. NCS had a strong chance near the end of the first half, when Margaret Dent '16 took a pass from Selin Everett '17 to break through for a one-on-one with the Stone Ridge goalie, but the keeper came out strong to make the save. On the NCS defensive end, the back five of Hadley Irwin '16, Addy Wolf '17, Mia Millstein '19, Fiona Heaps '19, and goalie Sam Gibby '19 managed to shut down Stone Ridge in the first half.
In the second half, NCS struck first. After the forward line of Everett, Claire McGinnis '17, and Natalie Belt '16 drew a corner, Everett took the inserted pass from Meghan McGovern '17 and generated a strong shot on goal. The Stone Ridge goalie made the save, but Stone Ridge could not clear the ball out of the circle and the ball popped out to the top left side of the circle, where Wolf pounced on it (pun intended) and launched what the official NCS scorekeeper described as a "rocket" shot on goal. The shot beat the Stone Ridge goalie and found the right corner to give NCS a 1-0 lead three minutes into the second half. The lead proved relatively short-lived, however, as Stone Ridge tied it up five minutes later. With Irwin out of the game after being hit by a Stone Ridge shot, Stone Ridge drew a penalty corner and capitalized, scoring on a hard drive from the top right of the circle through a screen of players. The game stayed knotted 1-1 for the remainder of regulation play, with both teams playing tough defense and both goalies coming up with big saves when necessary. In the overtime period, NCS was able to draw several corners but could not convert. Stone Ridge, for its part, had a fast break off of a penalty corner but a hustling Millstein and Wolf recovered downfield in time to prevent a shot.
