Varsity Field Hockey Beats Brookewood on Homecoming

The NCS Varsity Field Hockey team delivered a Homecoming win on Saturday, September 26 with a 1-0 victory over Brookewood.  NCS got off to a strong start, with the forward line of Selin Everett '17, Margaret Dent '16, and Siobhan Robinson-Marshall '16 keeping the ball in the offensive zone during the opening minutes.  Midway through the first half, the Eagles drew a penalty corner.  Although it was their only penalty corner in the first half, NCS made it count.  Meghan McGovern '17 inserted to Everett at the top left of the circle, and Everett dodged a defender and passed off to Co-Captain Rosie Delk '16 at top center.  Delk sent a pass to Addy Wolf '17 in the left corner, and Wolf swept the ball in to give NCS the lead.  On the defensive end, Meredith Sherman '16 (a team leading 12 tackles), Co-Captain Hadley Irwin '16, Mia Millstein '19 and Wolf helped keep Brookewood from getting any shots on goal in the first half.

With a 1-0 lead after halftime, Brookewood came out strongly and challenged NCS with several sustained forays into the NCS circle.  Eagle goalie Ellie Frank '16 proved more than up the task, however, notching five saves and short-circuiting several Brookewood scoring efforts with big clears.  For its part, NCS had several strong chances, including a fast break when Everett fed a beautiful through pass to Claire McGinnis '17, who corralled the ball and made a strong move on goal only to be robbed by a terrific save.  Brookewood continued to attack and generated several penalty corners late in the game, but NCS got some key defensive help from Delk in the midfield, with big hits to get the ball out of trouble, and from forward Margaret Dent '16, who had a number of take-aways in the waning minutes of play to help NCS run out the clock.  With the win, the Eagles bring their record to 2-2-1.
