NCS Varsity Field Hockey Shuts Out Flint Hill on the Road

The NCS Varsity Field Hockey team earned another ISL win on Tuesday, Sept. 29, with a 2-0 win on the road against Flint Hill.  The Eagles struck first, after the forward line of Margaret Dent ‘16, Caitlin McNamara ‘17, and Claire McGinnis ‘17 earned a penalty corner ten minutes into the game.  Meghan McGovern ‘17 earned the assist off the inserted pass to Addy Wolf ‘17, who scored her third goal in the last three games with a strong shot from the top left that found the corner of the cage.  The Eagles continued to threaten during the rest of the half, sparked by strong midfield play from McGovern, co-Captain Rosie Delk ‘16, Meredith Sherman ‘16, and Natalie Belt ‘16, but were unable to add to the lead.

In the second half, the Eagles continued to dominate the play but could not initially break through for another goal.  Indeed, the NCS lead was in doubt with ten minutes to play when Flint Hill hit a ball at midfield behind the defense and was able to capitalize with the first of several penalty corners.  NCS goalie Sam Gibby ‘19 came up big with several saves, but one sizzling shot from the top got by her and seemed destined to tuck just inside the right post for the tying goal.  Wolf, who was playing “post” on the penalty corner, made a brilliant goal line save and cleared the ball out of danger.  Perhaps inspired by the near escape, the Eagles counterattacked, led by forward Selin Everett ‘17, who drew several penalty corners while keeping the ball in the Flint Hill defensive zone.  After a series of near misses (and some sparkling play from the Flint Hill goalie), Everett created the insurance goal with just over six minutes to play.  Everett received the insertion pass from McGovern and, instead of shooting right away, stickhandled her way deep into the circle and laid off a perfect pass off the post that McGinnis touched in for the second goal.
