Varsity Field Hockey Defeats Saint John Paul the Great High School at Home
The NCS Varsity Field Hockey team defeated Saint John Paul the Great High School at home on Thursday, October 1, by a 3-0 score. On the offensive end, Selin Everett ‘17 (1 goal, two assists) and Meghan McGovern ‘17 (2 goals) combined for all of the scoring on the day. On the defensive side of things, a collaboration in goal between Ellie Frank ‘16 and Sam Gibby ‘19 (a combined 18 total saves) preserved the shutout for the Eagles. NCS started quickly, earning a penalty and converting on it within the first minute-and-a-half of the game. McGovern inserted the ball to Everett at the top of the circle, and then tipped in Everett’s shot on the left post for the first goal of the contest. NCS dominated much of the play for the remainder of the first half, sparked by strong midfield play from McGovern, co-captain Rosie Delk ‘16, Domi Turner ‘16, and Serena Irwin ‘17, and added a second goal when Everett carried the ball into the circle and scored an unassisted goal. The second half proved to be more of a defensive battle, as SJPG out-shot the Eagles but could not get the ball past Gibby. The NCS defense, led by co-captain Hadley Irwin ‘16 (seven tackles), Mia Millstein ‘19, and Fiona Heaps ‘19, succeeded in clearing the ball out of the NCS zone and the Eagles put renewed pressure on SJPG. The Eagles succeeded in adding an additional goal at the 16:57 mark of the second half, when Everett crossed the ball from right to left and McGovern tipped it past the SJPG keeper.
