Robotics Team Competes Well at State Meet

The NCS Alpha Eagles robotics team competed Dec. 3-4 in the Virginia/DC state tournament for FIRST LEGO League, the school's first time to participate in the world's largest FLL tournament.

More than 100 teams came to James Madison University, all of whom qualified through regional tournaments. NCS took 2nd place in its regional meet Nov. 14 to earn the bid to Harrisonburg.

The Alpha Eagles—made up of two 8th graders and nine 6th graders—competed in project development, robot design, and team-building. Although they will not advance to nationals, judges lauded them for their excellent communication, their teamwork, and their ability to construct a chicken-and-pedestrian highway overpass in under 5 minutes. The LEGO chickens remained unharmed.

Members of the Alpha Eagles are Lyla Bhalla-Ladd '21, Sarah Muoio '21, Camille Beavers '23, Alyssa Bui '23, Lauren Lucy Caddell '23, Madison Imani Dunstan '23, Alexa Gerald '23, Eleanor Guha '23, Caitlin Hollingshead '23, Aisha Janus '23, and Carden Royster '23. Encouraged by coaches Frances O'Connor and Steven Rentz, they met twice a week beginning in September to research, code, design, and fix their robot and project.

We are very proud of these hardworking engineers, coders, and scientists, and we look forward to their scrimmages of the spring, when they will host other winning FLL teams.

Photographs from their weekend in Harrisonburg are posted in the Media Gallery.
