Crew Team Attends 2017 Erg Sprints

NCS attended the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints at TC Williams High School in Alexandria, VA. At this event, the girls are assigned one rowing machine amongst hundreds lined up carefully and occupying a full gymnasium. Cables connecting all the ergometers show real-time racing statistics on screens throughout the room, and hundreds of parents and coaches fill the bleachers and surround the ergs to view the pieces. With nerves running high, the team had their first chance of the year to compete against local athletes from all over the region. The women's 20 minute row was the highest subscribed event of the day with 130 athletes participating. Despite the unfamiliar conditions, the girls of NCS fared well, placing 7 athletes in the top 20, and 16 in the top 50%. Many of our rowers managed to post personal bests for this particular piece. Captain Serena Irwin '17 took the overall bronze medal, rowing 5101 meters. The girls are now looking forward to finishing the winter strong and getting on the river soon.
