NCS Inducts 15 Seniors Into Cum Laude Society

NCS inducted 15 seniors April 28 into its chapter of the Cum Laude Society, a ceremony that highlights their scholastic achievement.

The event was highlighted by a keynote speech from English teacher Jane Simchak, who is retiring this June after 21 years at the school. Ms. Simchak told the students that the occasion put her in mind of a verse from Ecclesiastes, which teaches that "to everything there is a season," including a time to sow and a time to reap.

"In my mind, the acts of sowing and reaping have always been metaphors for the educational process," she added. "The harvest that results goes on to nourish others." And in noting their accomplishments at NCS, Ms. Simchak asked the students, "What seeds will you sow? ... What will be the harvest of your life? It is for you now to answer these questions."

Mathematics teacher Patricia Howie, the Cum Laude chapter president, noted that this year's inductees represent the 64th NCS class to join the society. Each year, 20 percent of the senior class is selected for membership, based on academic excellence in 10th through 12th grade.
