Girls Lacrosse Wins ISL A Tournament

Congratulations to the Cathedral varsity girls lacrosse team on winning the ISL A Tournament Championship!  The Eagles faced a tough Flint Hill team in the finals played at The Madeira School on May 15th.  Cathedral is proud to bring home the championship with a final score of 13-12.  Leading the Eagles offensively were senior attacker Honor Gabriel '17 with 4 goals and 2 assists and sophomore midfielder Chloe Conaghan '19 with 3 goals and 2 assists.  Freshman newcomer Sam Douki '20 took many of the draw controls helping the Eagles win possession at crucial moments of the game.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead out-scoring the Huskies 8-2 in the beginning moments of the game.  The team worked hard to win possession from the draw and moved the ball well offensively.  Four of the team's first eight goals were assisted (Nicole Manos '18 notched 2 assists, and senior co-captains Honor Gabriel and Addy Wolf '18 both notched 1 assist apiece).  However, the Huskies quickly climbed right back in the game scoring 4 unanswered goals in the last 8 minutes of the game.  Cathedral went into halftime up 8-6.

The second half witnessed much back-and-forth action between the two teams as they traded goals for the full 25 minutes.  The Eagles kept their composure and scored when it counted to keep at least a 2 or 3 goal lead for much of the second half.  Honor Gabriel found the back of the net 2 more times in the second half with assists coming from Chloe Conaghan both times.  Both Sam Douki (assist from Lach) and Zoe Lach '18 (assist from Gabriel) scored big goals this half to keep the game close.

The Cathedral defense was put to the test by an aggressive and fast Flint Hill offense.  The defending team of Ally Edge '18, Trish Gerli '19, Elizabeth Thoren '17, Miranda Giambi '20, and Katie Skoff '18 used fast feet and clear heads to keep out the Huskies.  Sophomore goalkeeper Lilly Keller '19 came up with 6 great saves in the second half often stopping shots in crucial moments.

With 5:48 on the clock, Flint Hill scored their 11th goal of the game pulling within one goal of the Eagles.  With the game on the line, the team turned up the intensity and kept possession of the ball for four minutes.  Addy Wolf capitalized on her defender being out of position and put the ball in the cage to make the score 13-11 with 1:18 to play.

Flint Hill won the ensuing draw control and scored within 15 seconds to again make it a one goal game.  With sheer determination, Cathedral won the last possession of the game and used great clock management to remain up by one as the last seconds ticked off the clock!
