Director of Counseling

National Cathedral School (NCS) announces a search for an experienced Director of Counseling. This is a full-time, 12-month, administrative staff position that will begin July 1, 2019.
 
In partnership with school administration, faculty and staff, the director manages the continued development, implementation, review, and update of the counseling program and offers guidance for the Health and Wellness program. The director provides leadership to ensure that counseling is integrated into the educational curriculum, programming, mission, and ethos of NCS. The director also advocates for students' mental health and education needs, works to support student access to treatment, and helps to create and maintain an emotionally healthy, productive, and safe school community. The director reports to the Associate Head of School/Head of the Upper School.
 
The director supervises the division counselors and school nurse; collaborates with division heads and counselors to implement school-wide initiatives; provides short-term counseling and coordinates comprehensive treatment plans for students; maintains communication with parents and outside providers; partners with learning specialists regarding academic accommodations; and facilitates crisis response in urgent student or community mental health situations. Classroom responsibilities include: serving as a co-advisor or advisor for students; teaching Health and Wellness, Health and Human Sexuality, and co-curricular classes/seminars; leading student support groups; and collaborating with the division counselors to enhance the health curriculum for students in developmentally appropriate ways.
 
The successful candidate will have significant experience as a counselor or therapist in a school setting, including a minimum of six years of direct counseling experience with children, adolescents, and families. Experience supervising other counselors and managing a departmental budget is desirable. A master's degree in counseling school counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field is preferred. The Director of Counseling must be certified and/or licensed in his or her field of practice. NCS is committed to leadership in multicultural education and a culturally diverse faculty and staff.
