NCS Inducts 18 Seniors Into Cum Laude Society

NCS inducted 18 seniors on April 25 into the Cum Laude Society, signifying their scholastic achievement at the school.
 
Mathematics teacher Patricia Howie, the Cum Laude chapter president, noted that this year's inductees represent the 66th class to join the society. Each year, 20 percent of the senior class is selected for the society, based on academic excellence in 10th through 12th grade.
 
The ceremony was highlighted by a keynote speech from Director of Counseling Sandi Krotman, who is leaving NCS this June after 24 years at the school.
 
She told the students, "You are friends, allies, activists, daughters, siblings, and grandchildren. All of you are many things, and when you are here at school, your teachers see only a slice of you. Your parents see another part, and your friends see a different slice. Each of you is more than what others see and even more than what you see of yourselves."
 
Krotman said she had three wishes for the seniors as they head into adulthood:
  • Have healthy relationships. "Be with people with whom you can be vulnerable, who don't want to change you and is trustworthy," Krotman said.
  • Have self-compassion. "Think of ways to be kind to yourself."
  • Know that you are enough as you are. "Your ability is not the concern. The issue is what you believe about your ability. You can be anything, but you don't have to be everything."
"It has been such a privilege to walking along your path and being able to be here with you right now," Krotman said.
