Avery Watkins '20 won a "best in show" award from the 2020 regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, and 25 other NCS students joined her in being recognized for exceptional artistic and literary talent.
Watkins was one of five writers in the Washington region nominated for the American Voices & Visions Medals. The medals, the Scholastic Awards' highest regional honor, recognize the writer and artist whose works most exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
Nine NCS students, including Watkins, won Gold Keys for creating the most accomplished works in the region. Ariana Thornton '24 won Gold Keys for both her writing and her artwork. All nine will now advance to the national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition, where winners will be announced this spring.
Twelve students were awarded regional Silver Keys for distinguished works, and 17 promising works received honorable mention.
Winners of multiple awards were Thornton, Sophia Charles '20, Charlotte Cooper '20, Sydney Featherstone '20, Emma Fullerton '22, Gillian Moore '20, Rose Papadopoulos '23, and Siena Waldman '20.
Charles and Moore were recognized for the third consecutive year in this competition, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, while Featherstone, Watkins, Sarah Asher '21, and Yvonne LopezDavila '21 were honored for the second straight year.
