NCS Announces '19-'20 Literary Award Winners

On Thursday, April 16, many of this year's writing award winners were announced at an Upper School assembly.

Peniel Ouabo '21 is this year's recipient of the Hyde Prize. First awarded in 1914, it honors Upper School extemporaneous writing in response to a single-word prompt. Finalists were Charlie Cooper '20, Elektra Papathanasiou-Goldstein '20, Madeleine Murnick '22, and Anna Riccardi '22.

The Tuckerman Prize honors outstanding Middle School extemporaneous writing on the same topic, which this year was "flight." The 2020 winner is Olivia Wei '25.

The English Department also awarded Writer's Prizes to the student in each grade whose one prose entry or three poetry submissions were judged superior. The senior-class prize is endowed and thus carries the additional honor of being a named award, the Alexa McMahon '05 Writers Day Award.
  • Middle School: Stephanie Dragoi '24 for "Where I'm From," "Perfection," and "Sunflower Field #926 - Romania"; and Mallika Mukherjee '25 for "Winter Sunsets" and "Origami."
  • Grade 9: Lauren Lucy Caddell ’23 for "Mirrored Discrepancies."
  • Grade 11: Helena Getahun-Hawkins ’21 for "Letter to Grandpa P."
  • Alexa McMahon '05 Writers Day Award: Kate Nuechterlein ’20 for "Things That Cannot Be Replaced."
Several other award recipients were recognized:
  • Isabel Hohenlohe '21 received a certificate of merit in literature from the National Society of Arts and Letters's Washington, D.C., chapter.
  • Aanya Hudda '21 is this year's recipient of the Killip Memorial Award and Alexa McMahon '05 Fellowship for Creative Writing, which jointly provide for attendance at the Sewanee Young Writers' Conference.
  • And Nia Brown '21 and Maddie Lee '21 are this year's winners of the Koch Fellowship, which provide for attendance at the Oxford Tradition, an academic program at Oxford University.
Upper School writing awards previously announced were the prize winners in the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards: Avery Watkins '20 won a national gold medal, while Sophia Charles '20, Nicole Vernot-Jonas '20, Cooper, and Nuechterlein won regional honors.

The assembly concluded with one of the highlights of the school year, the unveiling of the new edition of NCS's student literary magazine Half in Earnest. The magazine showcases prose, poetry, and photography, and co-editors in chief Millie Atkins '20 and Charles said this year's issue was dedicated to NCS history teacher Beth Dudrow.

Congratulations to all the honorees!
