McIntyre Named Incoming Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Akailah Jenkins McIntyre has been appointed director of diversity, equity, and inclusion at National Cathedral School, effective July 1, Head of School Susan C. Bosland announced on April 21.

McIntyre joins NCS from Roland Park Country School, a girls' school in Baltimore, where she is director of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Her appointment follows a national search in which three finalists ultimately interviewed on-campus. McIntyre will succeed Rachael Flores, who will join the Spence School in New York in July as Head of Upper School.

McIntyre serves as a member of the Roland Park administration. She has worked and collaborated with students at all grade levels, from kindergarten through Grade 12, as well as faculty, staff, parents, and alums. McIntyre's work has encompassed initiatives and topics across the broad spectrum of cultural competency, identity, diversity and inclusion. McIntyre has led professional development opportunities, presented workshops, managed diversity committees, founded affinity groups, actively engaged the school community in dialogue and critical conversations, and designed curriculum. She also teaches an Upper School English course.

McIntyre "puts joy at the center of all" her work, she says, and she believes that students and educators learn and work best in spaces in which they feel valued. Her areas of professional emphasis have included fostering a positive workplace culture, restorative practices, student activism and leadership training, and creating equitable classrooms.

"We are delighted to welcome Akailah to the NCS community," Bosland said. "Her experience, expertise, and dedication to her work in school communities is inspiring!"

McIntyre joined Roland Park in 2018 after teaching English at Baltimore's Benjamin Franklin High School and at Capital City Public Charter School in the District. She holds master's and bachelor's degrees from Vanderbilt University, where her studies focused on sociology, American studies, learning, diversity, and urban studies. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Southern California.

We look forward to welcoming McIntyre to campus soon!
