15 Seniors Inducted Into Cum Laude Society

NCS inducted 15 seniors on Thursday, April 23, into the Cum Laude Society, signifying their scholastic achievement at the school.

This year's inductees represent the 67th class from NCS to join the society, said mathematics teacher Patricia Howie, the Cum Laude chapter president. Each year, 20 percent of the senior class is selected for the society, based on academic excellence in 10th through 12th grade.

The ceremony was held by video-conference, with participants gathering remotely. It was highlighted by a keynote speech from social sciences teacher Lydia Lewis, who is retiring from NCS next month after 19 years at the school.

"Watching you grow into young women through your years at NCS has fed my soul," Lewis told the students. "Each of you brought gifts that fostered the academic and emotional health of our community." As the students prepare "to start a next chapter in our lives and contribute to new communities," she offered them three pieces of advice:
  • Develop a daily practice of some sort. "It will nourish your soul, keep you connected to something greater than any one of us, and help you to keep your equilibrium when your world is out of balance."
  • "Learn to hold the space of not knowing. Keep a sense of curiosity, not fear."
  • "Keep a sense of wonder. Hold fast to your love of learning, and share it with others, for it is contagious, and we are all the better for it."
