Caroline L. ‘25 Named to All-State Cross Country Team
NCS cross country runner Caroline L. ‘25 can now add “All-State athlete” to her list of achievements. On Jan. 4, the District of Columbia State Athletic Association released its fall 2021 list of All-State runners. Nine girls across D.C. were selected for the recognition in cross country based on their finishes in the state championship meet in early November. Caroline’s time of 20:46.18 in the five-kilometer race, and her 7th-place finish overall, ultimately secured her the All-State honor.
At the beginning of the season in August, Caroline, a freshman, was new to cross country. “I didn’t have a lot of experience racing,” she admits. However, her natural talent for running soon emerged. Jim Ehrenhaft, head coach of cross country at NCS, says, “Caroline trained and competed as if she had been running cross country for years. It was clear right from the first day that nothing was going to stop Caroline from striving to achieve at her best.”
By the end of the season, Caroline was the top NCS runner in every race she ran. Ehrenhaft attributes her success to an “unsurpassed” work ethic and a mental fortitude that “defines her character.” Now, running cross country is more than a sport to Caroline. “It is an avenue to challenge myself through discipline and hard work in the race and in weeks prior to training,” she says.
Caroline especially cherishes the camaraderie she shares with her teammates. “Although it is often classified as an individual sport, I love the team atmosphere of cross country.” Her teammates at the state championship meet, both on and off the course, supported her on race day. She recalls her upperclassmen teammates, who participated in the competition, encouraging her in the pre-race huddle to have fun and to “give it my all despite the nerves we were all feeling.” Teammates cheered Caroline on throughout the 3.1 miles and embraced her after she crossed the finish line. Ehrenhaft notes her impact on the team during her first year. “Her leadership in the example she set every day at practice set a tone that inspired all of her teammates,” he says.
