Lower School Student Published in Peer-Reviewed Academic Journal

At only 12 years old, Sophia ‘28 is a published author in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Social Science and Economic Research. Over a span of 10 weeks, Sophia worked with a group of students on a research team to explore the ability of artificial intelligence to recognize acne and jaundice. She programmed computers, loaded them with the study’s findings, and worked on a bibliography. In the end, the computers correctly recognized the skin conditions 90 percent of the time, and the paper was published.

Sophia’s involvement in the study began when the director of research at her tutoring center, Dr. John Leddo, recognized Sophia’s talent in math and science and invited her to join his research team.

Sophia credits the 6th-grade science curriculum with piquing her interest in the field. “NCS provided me the tools and resources to open up my mind to math and science,” she says. “The different classes helped me develop a curiosity [for the subjects]. We studied physics in Ms. Wesley’s class this year, and her curriculum and teaching methods were one of the things that helped me fall in love with science. We're now studying simple machines, which are important in engineering,” says Sophia.

Reflecting on Sophia’s role in the research study, Head of Lower School Becca Jones says, “I am thrilled when students pursue an interest or passion outside of school and they share their experiences with us. To be a published researcher at such a young age is impressive.”

Congratulations, Sophia!
