15 Inducted Into Cum Laude Society

NCS inducted 15 seniors on April 29 into the Cum Laude Society, signifying their scholastic achievement at the school. Each year, 20 percent of the senior class is selected for the society, based on academic excellence in 10th through 12th grade.

 

Mathematics teacher Patricia Howie, the Cum Laude chapter president, noted that this year's inductees represent the 69th class to join the society. The ceremony was highlighted by a keynote speech from social sciences teacher Mary DiQuinzio, who retired in December after 18 years at NCS.

 

DiQuinzio focused on a theme of community in her address to students. She described how celebrating this achievement also meant celebrating the different facets of the NCS community that brought students to it. DiQuinzio thanked administrators for making it possible for students to return to campus during COVID-19, faculty who supported students on an individual basis and ensured learning continued during COVID-19, staff for their work to "keep us all afloat," and families who provided emotional, logistical, and financial support.

Lastly, she honored the student body's role in the celebration, citing how they cheered each other on, enriched each other's lives, and provided moral and academic support when needed. She praised the Class of 2022 specifically as a collegial, kind, inclusive, and respectful group who expressed gratitude for the traditions they were able to enjoy after two years of disruption. 

She told the students, "You'll join new communities in a few months, but you're not leaving your old one. Community, like identity, is never singular in the modern world."
