Middle School Makes Mark in Math

NCS placed third out of 13 schools in the MathCounts regional competition at St. Anselm's Abbey School on Feb. 12, qualifying them to participate in the DC state-level competition on March 19.

Team members include 8th-grade students Abigail Bartram, Katherine Ann Van Kirk, and Emma Mazzuchi, and 7th-grade students Diana Hla and Becky Maksimovic. The team will continue the competition at the state level on March 19, which will also be held at St. Alselm’s. Results will determine who will represent DC at the national competition in May.  Mathematics Teacher Cahlan Mazur is the team's coach.

Out of the 13 schools that competed on Feb. 12, St. Alban's took first place, Sidwell second, and Maret, fourth.

Now in its 28th year, MATHCOUNTS is a national program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement. Consisting of creative problems that promote critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, on the state level the MATHCOUNTS competitions have written and oral rounds, as well as individual and team components.

Calling All Middle and Upper School Students Interested in Math

The Independent Schools Math Association of Greater Washington (ISMAW) holds math meets throughout the year at various schools. NCS recently hosted an upper school meet in which over 150 students participated, including a visiting team from China. The next upper school meet is scheduled for Feb. 24 at Landon School, and the next middle school meet will take place at Norwood on April 11. Students are encouraged to watch for the sign-ups for these events which will be posted on the bulletin boards and announced in the mathematics classes.

If you’re a 7th grader and would like to compete in next year’s MathCounts, meetings will start next fall and will be open to anyone who is interested.
