NCS Takes Part in Diversity Conference for Area Students

National Cathedral School students joined others from Sidwell, Potomac School, Stone Ridge, and St. Albans at the first annual Regional Diversity Leadership Conference on April 21, 2012, hosted by Georgetown Day School.

The purpose of the conference was to create a collaborative network between local independent schools to address issues and solutions for supporting school communities in multicultural education. The participants were broken into six task forces committees that focused on the state of social action, the state of faculty, the state of LGBTQ affairs, the state of race, the state of student/administration relations, and the state of white privilege. The students focused on moving toward creating a school environment where multiple voices from differing backgrounds and prospective are embraced and integrated into every aspect of the school community.

NCS participants included:

Lidwina Bell ‘15
Emily Crehan ‘12
Sararose Gaines ‘14
Lhani Jamision ‘13
Araba Koomson ‘13
Shirah Moffatt-Darko ‘14

Some were surprised to see how many students in area private schools feel they are impacted by issues of equity and social justice. “I was encouraged by the enthusiasm of the participants, who I feel will be the future leaders in social change,” said one of the NCS students. Many of the girls said they'd like to see a more diverse group at future meetings, so that more people from different backgrounds could contribute to the creation of solutions. –Wendy Nia-Griffin, Counselor/Diversity Consultant
