NCS’ historic prize day honored the Class of 2012 and student achievement.
Under a bright and cloudless sky, National Cathedral School held its 112th Flag Day on June 9, 2012. Held since the first year of the school’s existence. this annual prize day emphasizes the national character of the school in several ways, from the Ceremony of the Flag, when student government leaders take down and raise a new flag, and the awarding of the Flag for highest academic achievement.
As in years past, this year’s seniors processed to form a dramatic arc around the flagpole on the Cathedral Close.
Audrey Louise Warren ’12 was chosen by her classmates to deliver the Flag Day address.
Mr. Stephen and Mrs. Carolyn Vinson Bou ’78, co-chairs of the Senior Parents’ Gift, announced that parents of the Class of 2012 raised $174,000 that will go to the Annual Fund in support of financial aid. This gift was achieved by a record 96% participation for the senior parent gift.
Flag Day is also a time when faculty service and retirements are recognized. Head of School Kathleen O’Neill Jamieson recognized Community Service Director Janice Peters for 20 years of service. Mrs. Jamieson then paid tribute to retiring faculty and staff members School Nurse Elizabeth Chau, Spanish Teacher Arlette Clayton, and Science Department Chair Elna Clevenger. She then announced two faculty awards: the Class of 1995 Senior Parent Gift, awarded to College Guidance Director Erin Johnston, and the John S. Wood “Great Cities” Teaching Fellowship, to Drama Teacher Christopher Snipe.
