Flag Day to be Held in Cathedral on Friday, June 7

With tropical storm Andrea forecast to bring heavy rains to Washington, DC on Friday, the NCS Flag Day service is being moved into the Cathedral, and will take place there starting at 6:00 pm. Flag Day is mandatory for all students, but the program is largely devoted to Upper School honors. As a practical matter, this means that Middle and Lower School parents, while welcome, should not feel obligated to come.

A very important note: St. Albans will be holding its Prize Day in the Cathedral from 3:30 pm until approximately 5:00 pm. Please respect STA’s event during that time and do not enter the Cathedral for seating until their ceremony is over. And, the Cathedral garage is likely to be quite full until St. Albans attendees leave.

Please note the following information about where and when NCS students should be dropped off, and where they should go.

Seniors are to report at 4:00 pm to Bethlehem Chapel to dress and pick up their roses. Very important: There will be a class photo at the High Altar as close to 5:00 pm as possible; seniors must be dressed and ready to process to the Altar at that time.

Lower School students are to be dropped at Hearst Circle at 5:00 pm and will be directed by LS faculty to go to Hearst Hall’s Dining Hall to assemble there; they will be taken by their faculty to their seats in the North and South balconies of the Cathedral. After moving through the flower line, the girls should follow their teachers back to the Dining Hall for pick-up. If you meet up with your daughter in the Cathedral afterward, please let her teacher know she’s leaving with you.

Students in Grades 9, 10, and 11 should get dropped at Hearst Circle at 5:15 pm and go directly to the Cathedral and down the side aisles to seating in the South Transept.

Middle School students should get dropped at 5:15 pm at North Circle and should enter the Cathedral and go directly to their regular section in the North Transept for seating.

Seats that are marked with family names on the ends of the rows are for persons with walking difficulties and we ask that you observe those signs.

At the conclusion of the Flag Day ceremony, the audience will be asked to stay in their seats until the seniors have processed down the center aisle and formed their traditional corridor in the narthex (the entry hallway outside the nave). Then NCS students will come down and pass through the corridor to receive flowers as they exit the Cathedral. Please help us observe this tradition.

Students are asked to leave iPods and other electronic equipment at home. Cellphones may be brought in to coordinate pick-up, but should be turned off during the ceremony that ends at approximately 7:30 pm.

A note regarding photography: NCS engages professional photographers to cover the ceremony who take individual portraits of each senior during their procession as part of our coverage of the event. Flash photography is not allowed in the Cathedral. Please respect the experience of other members of the audience during the ceremony.
