Honoring Ten Years of Service

Ten years and a day after Kathleen O’Neill Jamieson’s installation as Head of School, NCS devoted its Cathedral service to celebrating her 10th anniversary and the school she leads.

The Rt. Rev. Mariann Budde, Bishop of Washington, gave the opening and closing prayers.

NCS Governing Board Chair Robert Cary delivered remarks in honor of Mrs. Jamieson, in which he describes how she demonstrates NCS’s core values of excellence, courage, service, and conscience. You can read his address here.

Mrs. Jamieson’s husband Daniel Jamieson, who is Associate Headmaster at St. Albans, also spoke, noting that more than anything else she would want the day to be about NCS’s students. And students made special contributions to the day.

With the help of art teachers Ms. Maffry and Ms. Eckmann, each Lower School student had made a tiny clay heart stamped with letters that spell a variety of words including NCS, RISE, LOVE, and the letters that spell Mrs. Jamieson’s own name. The letters were then painted purple and gold and placed inside a glass vase of sunflowers, which was presented to Mrs. Jamieson at the service. “We hope that every time you use this vase, you will remember how much our hearts in the lower school are filled with love, respect, and appreciation for NCS, and all that you do for us, Mrs. Jamieson!”

Middle School students chose to mark the day by writing responses to “This I believe about my school.” Ten responses were read during the service: you can read them here.  All will be framed as a keepsake for Mrs. Jamieson.

Music was provided by the Cathedral Girl Choristers, who sang “how lovely are thy dwellings fair” (Psalm 84, music by Eric Thiman) for the offertory. The Upper School a cappella group Sarsaparilla (Claire Alcus ‘14, Madeline Bath ‘14, Sophia Benson ‘14, Maddie Cross ‘15, Shirah Moffatt-Darko ‘14, Hadley Irwin ‘16, Charlotte Jeppsen ‘14, Avri Parker ‘15, Tess Schaberg ‘15, Sita Strother ‘16)  performed “Stand by Me.”

Later, at lunchtime, there was cake for everyone in honor of the day.

We salute Mrs. Jamieson on a remarkable ten years and thank her for dedication to NCS!
