“I Too am Harvard” Sparks Discussion

On May 8, NCS’s Black Student Union (BSU) sponsored a forum highlighting the experience of students of color at Ivy League and top-ranked universities. This discussion was inspired by the "I Too Am Harvard" play and subsequent Tumbler photo campaign initiated by the students of Harvard University. The campaign highlights micro-aggressions students experience in college.

Students from both NCS and St. Albans heard from, and were inspired by, NCS alumnae Kerri Redding’ 89, Bianca Bell ’07, and Tristiana Hinton’06, who shared what they’ve experienced at their respective universities.  They discussed whether they encountered situations like those discussed in the play and, if so, what lessons they learned and how they persevered.  The discussion provided students with examples of ways to navigate difficult conversations now and when they move on to  their respective colleges.

Speaking of “I Too am Harvard,” Harvard University President Drew Faust noted it had “generated discussion here, and elsewhere, far beyond Harvard, about the extremely significant issues of inclusion and identity.”   These discussions are going on in schools like Yale, Duke, Oxford University, the University of Virginia, and now, here at NCS.--Wendy-Nia Griffin, Diversity Coordinator and Counselor
