NCS Announces '17-'18 Literary Award Winners

More than a dozen students were recognized Tuesday for outstanding writing in an Upper School assembly that concluded NCS's annual Writers Day celebration.
On Tuesday, May 1, NCS concluded its annual Writers Day celebration with an Upper School assembly at which many of the year's writing awards were announced.

The Hyde Prize, which honors Upper School extemporaneous writing done in response to a single-word prompt, was awarded to Eliza Poggi '19. Finalists were Sophia Charles '20, Alexandra Eberstadt '20, Isabella Houle '19, Bota Saudabayeva '18, and Iris Wu '20.

The Tuckerman Prize honors outstanding Middle School extemporaneous writing on the same topic, which this year was "charge." The 2018 winner is Stella-Grace Ford '23.

The English Department also awarded Writer's Prizes to students whose one prose entry or three poetry submissions were judged superior. The senior-class prize is endowed and thus carries the additional honor of being a named award, the Alexa McMahon '05 Writers Day Award.
  • Middle School: Lauren Lucy Caddell '23 for "The Words Between the Lines."
  • Grade 9: Aanya Hudda '21 for "Your Beauty," "My Story," and "Devoted Assistant."
  • Grade 10: Nicole Vernot-Jonas '20 for "Room 439."
  • Grade 11: Taliyah Emory-Muhammad '19 for "Celestial Speculation Sonnet," "Celestial Clarification Sonnet," and "I Pledge Allegiance to the Name I Belong."
  • Alexa McMahon ’05 Writers Day Award: Andrea Escoto '18 for "The Offering" and Bota Saudabayeva '18 for "Gradepoint Average."
Katherine Leahy '19 is this year's recipient of the Killip/McMahon Fellowship, which provides for attendance at the Sewanee Young Writers' Conference. Upper School writing awards previously announced were this year's Koch Fellows (Esther Eriksson von Allmen '19 and Avery Kean '19) and the three national prize winners in the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards (Mallory Moore '18, Esther Eriksson von Allmen '19, and Sophia Charles '20).

The assembly concluded with one of the highlights of the school year, the unveiling of the new edition of NCS's student literary magazine Half in Earnest. The magazine showcases prose, poetry, and photography, and co-editors in chief Mallory Moore '18 and Bota Saudabayeva '18 said this year's issue was dedicated to NCS archivist Elna Clevenger.

Congratulations to all the honorees!
