3 Students Win National Writing Awards

Mallory Moore '18, Esther Eriksson von Allmen '19, and Sophia Charles '20 won silver medals in the national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.
Three NCS students are national award winners in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.

Mallory Moore '18, Esther Eriksson von Allmen '19, and Sophia Charles '20 each received silver medals for work that demonstrated high accomplishment. They were among 15 students of D.C. schools to earn gold or silver medals. Moore and Charles both won for their short stories, and Eriksson von Allmen was honored in the Personal Essay/Memoir category.

They join a roster of national Art & Writing Awards recipients that includes Sylvia Plath, Lena Dunham, Joyce Carol Oates, and NCS alumna Katie Mitchell '11, as well as Ken Burns, Truman Capote, and Robert Redford. The awards were first introduced in 1923.

Moore, Eriksson von Allmen, and Charles qualified for the national competition by winning regional Gold Key awards last month from the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.

Their works will be now considered for publication in two Scholastic annuals, the National Catalog and The Best Teen Writing.

Congratulations to Mallory, Esther, and Sophia!
