Middle School Clubs

Equity Club
Equity Club meets once a month in a coordinate lunch bunch with St. Albans students to discuss matters of equity and inclusion in our schools and in our society. Members of the club will attend one or two regional middle school diversity conferences. Our club will also have the chance to meet with the Upper School Equity Board two to three times this year.

Film Club
Meeting after sports on Fridays until approximately 4:45 pm, this club offers students an introduction to the world of cinema. Students will explore different film genres, including the evolution of film, from early films to current classics. In addition to watching movies, we will work on film technique and will participate in lively movie discussions. Students will also make film, including recreating scenes from favorite movies or coming up with original plotlines. Popcorn provided!

Half-in-Earnest (H.I.E.) Literary Magazine
H.I.E., the NCS literary magazine, provides students the opportunity to express themselves creatively in writing, photographs, and drawings. Although the 8th-grade English teacher functions as the sponsor for the publication, every submission is reviewed in group discussions by student staff. These discussions analyze the elements of the work that are successful or not; as a result, participation in H.I.E. serves to heighten the girls’ appreciation for well-crafted writing and art because the conversation encourages an understanding of why a piece is effective. The work that the girls do to select writing and art for publication therefore reflects important aspects of the school’s academic mission; a girl’s critical-thinking skills and creativity are both developed when she joins the weekly H.I.E. meetings.

Improv Club
This new club offers students the opportunity to leave their inhibitions at the door! Club members will participate in improv games that require them to think quickly and creatively, support their partners, and explore character and scene development. No experience required!

Library Board
This student leadership group will work with Ms. Dickinson to plan Middle School library activities such as our celebrations of Teen Read Week, National Library Month, and National Poetry Month as well as other fun events including movie nights, a coffeehouse, and much more! The group will meet during lunch, usually on the first B day of the month. Applications are due Monday, Sept. 19.

Model United Nations
Students interested in exploring international issues and varied perspectives will find a home in Model UN! Students will take on the role of individual countries, working together to identify their specific goals and interests around particular issues, and how they differ from those of other nations. Students can participate in optional Model UN conferences at neighboring schools.

NCS Notables
This laid-back book club meets in the library. In Notables, students share recent reads, participate in themed discussions, and do occasional book-related crafts.  This year, Notables will emphasize reading new books and finding ways for the members to share recommendations with the larger Middle School community.

Politics Club
In this new club, students will explore political ideologies – including their own – and participate in discussions and debates about political issues. The election season provides a timely backdrop for this group, which is committed to brave, respectful dialogue.

Read It & Eat
This new book club program will provide an opportunity for students interested in reading and discussing a book with a small group. Offered periodically throughout the year, each session will have a limited number of spaces to keep the group the best size for strong discussion. Interested students can sign up when a new session is announced based on their interest in the chosen title and their schedule at the time.  For each session, copies of the book will provided to registered students about a month in advance of the discussion date. Then the group will meet after sports on the decided date to eat a meal and discuss the book.

Robotics & Makers
Robotics and Makers is a club in which we explore engineering principles through playing with Legos, small robotic components, and tinkering with small machines. From creating a computer keyboard out of a banana, to sewing wearable robots into our pockets, to taking toasters apart to glimpse their inner workings, this hands-on STEM club provides fun for adventurers of all kinds.

Service Board
Members of the MS Service Board will have the opportunity to guide the Middle School's role in school-wide initiatives as well as develop MS-specific service activities. Additionally, we hope that each service board member will experience growth in both her definition and her understanding of community service.
