Joining the Diplomatic Corps at Model UN

The opportunity to learn more about solving real-world problems through international diplomacy brought 32 Upper School students to Philadelphia last weekend, where they devoted their weekend to the 33rd Ivy League Model U.N. Conference.

NCS represented two countries, Argentina and Eritrea, at the Jan. 26-29 conference, with each student serving as a U.N. delegate, assigned to a committee. Topics under consideration by the delegates in these simulated committees included the refugee diaspora and the legitimacy of drone strikes. Students had the responsibility of representing their country's interests accurately, even if it differed from their own. Before the conference, they prepared position papers on these issues, and in Philadelphia, they met with their committees a half-dozen times to try to forge consensus on a course of action.

The ILMUNC is one of the largest Model U.N. conferences in the country, annually drawing thousands of students. The weekend also included networking opportunities, a chance to tour the University of Pennsylvania campus, and a delegate dance on the final evening.

We are proud that so many NCS students were drawn to learn more about international affairs, and special thanks go to faculty chaperones Dr. Tony Speranza and Emily Fetting, whose participation made the trip possible.
