A Look at Diplomacy's Opportunities in 'Global Conversations'

For the second installment of the "Global Conversations" series, NCS welcomed to campus five women who work in international affairs for a discussion about "Diplomacy's New Frontiers."

Taking part in the April 11 panel conversation were Kimberly Kahnhauser Freeman, executive director of the Women's Foreign Policy Group; Kathryn Fitrell, a Foreign Service officer at the State Department; Nicole Ng, a research assistant at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Chelsea Porter, a diplomat at Australia's Embassy to the United States, and Trisha Ripley, an official at the National Counterterrorism Center.

Addressing an audience of Upper and Middle School students, the speakers discussed their daily work life, their mentors, good advice they have received, why global careers are important, and many other topics. Questions from the students ranged from the specific—"What does a think tank actually do?"—to the broad—"How has your career changed your views of your own country?"

Moderating the conversation was Director of Global Programs Melody Fox Ahmed, and Maggie Wang '19, who served as secretary-general for last winter's Middle School Model United Nations conference at NCS, introduced the panelists.

The Global Conversations series is sponsored by the Parents Association's International Committee, and it intends to introduce ideas, people and opportunities to students about possible projects and experiences in adulthood. It also addresses two strategic priorities in the NCS 2018-2023 Strategic Plan: teaching students to lead in a dynamic world and enriching the student experience.

Thank you to the panelists, Ms. Fox-Ahmed, and the parents for volunteering their time and dedication for this meaningful discussion!
